William Allaudin, Jean-Luc, Nina
This week I’m reading the final chapter of Bridge of Waves (what music is and how listening to it changes the world) again. From page 209:
We are a visual people. Most of our understanding comes through the eyes. The ears, for us, play second fiddle. Here is a practice that will help to balance the ears with the eyes. When you get to the end of this paragraph, take a moment to close your eyes and welcome into your ears every audible vibration. As the sounds flood toward you, notice the light on your newly blank screen, a kind of sculpture shaped by sound but lit from within. The bird to catch is that first whoosh of aural clarity, the slow-motion moment of opening to sound. End of paragraph.
Watched Nouvelle Vague and became a fan of Jean-Luc Godard despite having never seen one of his films (will watch Breathless next). My notes: Lives life calmly yet intensely through art. No rushing. Improvisational. Pinball machine (videogames). Stepping away from work to let the subconscious do its work. I wonder if the writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation named Picard after him.
Played a little Flight Sim 2024 to show a visiting friend his house from above, but when I tried to play other videogames my hands ended up on musical keys and bass strings.
Currently learning Nina Simone’s Baltimore.
